Thanks for writing this, Emily. We needed to hear it. I also loved your review on Amazon. I am glad to see that this issue is finally being discussed more comfortably in faith circles. Even before the time referenced here and before this term "deconstruction" was popular, I felt we experienced a loss in the 1980s when several big-name evangelists fell from grace. On the one hand, we should expect that humans will fall, so we take note to not put our wholehearted trust in celebrity types on Christian podiums, but there is something that happens inside of us when we see our Christian brothers and sisters fall, some kind of "collective" loss--at least that's what it felt like for me, back then. I also became angry (and wrote some very angry poems that I may never share publicly). I saw more of my friends in the 80s and 90s move away from charismatic ministries since more "orthodox" or liturgical congregations became more appealing to them. I still attended churches with a charismatic background but I wanted to see more scripture, alongside legit works of the Holy Spirit. I found God and comfort when I had the truth of scripture alongside a spirit that is still wanting to heal us, grow us, speak to us. (At the same time, I was experiencing a loss of faith related to personal and cultural issues, but that is a story for another time.) SO glad you wrote this. I'm looking into the book now. Blessings!
